I was watching the news and saw that the government is asking the public to give suggestions to make Singapore and liveable and sustainable place to live in. I'm annoyed with the current public transportation system, so, I decided to give them my two cents worth of ideas and feedback.
"I think the government is not putting enough focus, emphasis and attention to public transportation. The measure implemented so far are merely firefighting strategies to cope with increasing vehicular traffic and congestion. People are unwilling to take public transportation because it's inconvenient and uncomfortable for them in the first place. The government needs to find ways to make public tranport commuting more comfortable and efficient. For example, many people incluing me, feel that trains are too packed even during non-peak hours. Despite attempts to increase train frequencies, the trains are still crowded, making a journey very uncomfortable especially those that have to endure long commutes. In order to solve this, I propose that the transport ministry consider express commuter trains such as the RER in Paris. Trains should stop only at stations that have high commuter traffic. By doing so the crowded situation in trains would be lessened and travel times will be slashed, further enouraging Singaporenas to use the MRT as a viable substitute. I would also suggest the speeding up of the bulding of the new MRT lines. This would also help tackle the overcrowding as people will have more lines to choose from when travelling from one place to another.
On the issue of encouraging cycling, Singaporeans will not want to cycle to MRT stations or between towns if the government doesn't provide bicycles in the first place. It would simply be too much of a hassle for them to buy their bicycles, carry them all the way down from their flats and find parking spaces to park their bikes. On top of that, they would also have to return to the same area to collect their bikes. This would be highly inconvenient for those that only intend to use bicycles one-way. My suggestion on how the government could encourage the use of bicycles is to PROVIDE them in the first place. Again, Singapore can learn from the Parisians. They have a very extensive bicycle renting scheme that is hassle-free and effective. Singapore should employ such a system as well. I believe it would be feasible since we already have the infrastructure to support the use of bikes. I think most Singaporeans are responsible enough to return the bikes once they reach their destination. It saves them the hassle of having to bring their bikes home too should they use another form of transportation to return home. I know I would use the bikes if the system was to be implemented here. I strongly suggest that the government look into this option."
The MRT is crowded and the buses are slow, noisy, packed, run-down and inefficient. If I were rich, I'd be driving a car too. We're a developed country and yet, we still lack a good and efficient public transportation network. We should aim to have public transport that is of the standards of London, Paris, New York, Tokyo and so on.
